Retiring GrainGrowers Board member and Wimmera grower Julia Hausler is encouraging eligible people to nominate for a position as Southern Region director on the GrainGrowers Board.

Mrs Hausler, who has reached the end of her rotation on the Board after nine years, said serving on the Board offered the opportunity to make a genuine difference in the opportunities and outcomes for members and help shape the grain industry across Australia.

“As someone with an active interest in the industry, I have found the role rewarding, working cooperatively and carefully considering ways in which GrainGrowers can address the needs of growers.”

“I have enjoyed future thinking about the things that are important to our grain businesses and seeing programs that can make a real difference being developed and implemented such as marketing workshops, carbon curious dinners or advocating for rural childcare or trade and market access.”

“Over my time on the Board, I have seen many worthwhile initiatives pursued – upskilling over 40 future Grain leaders, providing governance training for over 20 On Board participants or being involved with group learning for 18-35yr olds at Innovation Generation.”

Mrs Hausler said it was exciting to see concepts such as the grain sustainability framework start in the board room and grow into fully fledged programs.

“The opportunity is there as a director to actively contribute to industry development – either directly through GrainGrowers projects and programs such as the National Grain Freight Strategy or by working collaboratively with other organisations such as the GRDC and the NFF,” she said.

To be eligible to apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member of GrainGrowers.
  • Be a resident or in the business of grain production in GrainGrowers Southern Region (south of Dubbo NSW, Victoria and Tasmania).
  • Hold a strong commitment to the further development of Australia's grain industry.

Additional desirable skills sought by GrainGrowers include:

  1. Engagement with members, the broader industry and government stakeholders.
  2. Investment and risk management experience.
  3. An understanding of either finance/accounting or sustainability/environmental, social, and governance (ESG).

The GrainGrowers Board consists of six grower directors – two elected from each of the three regions, Northern, Southern and Western - and two independent directors.

Mrs Hausler said anyone interested should visit the GrainGrowers website, download the application form and apply before the closing date of 31 May .
