GrainGrowers has announced Chief Executive Officer Shona Gawel has resigned and will finish with the organisation prior to Christmas, with a recruitment process for her successor already under way.

GrainGrowers Chair Rhys Turton thanked Ms Gawel for her extraordinary contribution and leadership to the grains sector, including successfully leading the industry through a particularly challenging year in 2026.

"Shona's passion for GrainGrowers and our industry has ensured Australia’s grain farmers have benefited from outstanding advocacy, which has guaranteed action and results on the challenges facing growers in uncertain times,” Mr Turton said.

“Furthermore, Shona has strengthened the reach and diversity within our capacity building programs and has resourced our thought leadership efforts to ensure tangible outcomes to mitigate industry risk.

"The introduction of a membership class for State Farming Organisations within GrainGrowers, confirmed at yesterday’s AGM, is an example of how Shona has led positive evolution within our business for members’ benefit.

“Shona has built a great team within GrainGrowers and nurtured a positive culture. She leaves the organisation in a strong, well respected and impactful position.

“She has been a great leader of our organisation and ambassador for the grains sector. While Shona will be sorely missed, we wish her all the best in her new role.”

Ms Gawel said “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as CEO of GrainGrowers. I am deeply grateful for the support of our board and our wonderful members across the country.

“I would also like to recognise the many incredible staff I have worked with during my time, whose dedication, expertise and hard work have helped us achieve so many great things as GrainGrowers.”
