GrainGrowers Chair Rhys Turton says while alternative suppliers of paraquat products remain an option for growers, Syngenta’s decision to exit all paraquat-containing products in Australia and New Zealand was still disappointing.
“Growers require continued access to paraquat to practise the sustainable farming methods they use today, which reduce soil erosion and fuel requirements, and help combat weed resistance,” Mr Turton said.
“Syngenta have based their decision on market dynamics, in the meantime science-based evidence continues to demonstrate paraquat is a tool that can be used safely by Australian growers.
“The tightened regulatory requirements around both the manufacture and application of paraquat-based products are no doubt significant factors in Syngenta’s decision.”
The Syngenta announcement follows the APVMA’s recent regulatory ruling relating to paraquat, which impacted application rates for a range of situations.
“Syngenta’s decision reaffirms the need for the sector to invest quickly and with intent to deliver alternative crop protection chemistries to market,” he said.
“GrainGrowers will also continue to work with our members, the GRDC and the broader industry to ensure there is ongoing research and development investment in maintaining existing chemistry and developing new solutions for Australian grain production.”
