Students from Capella State School were given first-hand experience in how to respond to an emergency at home when GrainGrowers hosted a series of kids first aid workshops in Capella this month.
The workshops trained students in first aid skills including: recognising an emergency; calling for help; the recovery position; snake bite response; and an introduction to CPR.
GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said the workshops, which had been well received in other states, were the organisation’s first to be held in Queensland.
“Unfortunately, farm injuries and fatalities are disproportionately higher in agriculture than in other industries, which is why farm safety is the top priority for growers and the broader grains industry,” Ms Gawel said.
"We wanted to share the message that basic first aid skills are important at any age.
“GrainGrowers represents more than 15,000 growers across the country and we are proud to bring this important training to schools in our cropping communities".
Capella State School Head of Curriculum, Kate Legge was thrilled to have her students participate in this year’s program.
“First aid is an important life skill that helps children develop the confidence and knowledge to respond safely in an emergency,” Ms. Legge said
“For students at Capella State School, where we are in a rural/remote community, these skills are especially valuable particularly because our students are connected to farming, mining, trades and other industries. Age-appropriate first aid education teaches students to recognise danger, seek help, call 000, and respond appropriately.
“Building these skills from a young age develops capable, safety-conscious young people with practical knowledge for school, home, work and community and we value the lessons from the Grain Growers Kids First Aid Program.”
The GrainGrowers Kids First Aid Workshops are part of the organisation's ongoing commitment to improving farm safety and further equipping rural communities across the nation with practical skills to respond in an emergency.
