Ahead of harvest, the National Policy Group (NPG) have come together amid a backdrop of rising trade volatility, fluctuating grain prices, and the lingering impact of seasonal challenges, particularly for those in the south.

At the final NPG meeting for 2025, members discussed topics such as trade and market access, grain classification and quality standards, fuel security and biosecurity. The NPG also covered issues around grower profitability, supply chain integrity and the opportunities with low-carbon liquid fuel. The group also discussed issues surrounding drought and climate change. GrainGrowers’ policy positions, reports and resources can be accessed here.

The group also received an update on the National Variety Trials (NVT) from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

Also, given the many discussions taking place about grains research and development, the NPG shared their perspectives about grains research and grower expectations. GrainGrowers has been holding consultations across grain growing regions to capture growers’ thoughts and views on grains R&D. While consultation has already taken place in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, there are sessions being held in Victoria and Western Australia over the coming weeks. Growers can register to attend here.

The NPG, a group of 15 member-elected growers, continues to play a vital role within GrainGrowers’ Policy Development Framework by ensuring grower voices can directly shape national policy.
