With harvest already underway for some WA growers, skilled labour shortages on-farm have been a challenge for many. GrainGrowers and Agribusiness Australia supported by Elders, Nutrien and CSBP have partnered to launch an innovative pilot program that will see farm-familiar workers paired with growers who require harvest staff.
Traditionally, seasonal harvest labour needs in WA are filled by skilled farm workers with a farming background from the Northern hemisphere but COVID-19 related travel restrictions have made this option unworkable for growers. The size of the crop, expected to be near record in some parts of WA, has also added additional pressure to securing enough harvest workers to help bring in the 2021 winter crop.
Three major agribusinesses Elders, Nutrien and CSBP are supporting the program, encouraging eligible members of their workforce to take up one of the many seasonal harvest roles on-farm over the coming months.
Harvest Force
A recent GrainGrowers national survey showed labour and skills shortages was a key issue across the country, but clearly the number one issue for WA grain growers. GrainGrowers and Agribusiness Australia supported by Elders, Nutrien and CSBP have partnered to launch Harvest Force.
We have enjoyed being able to welcome keen industry friends onto our farm and have them help us harvest one of biggest crops we might likely ever see. We would like to thank GrainGrowers for providing this exceptional opportunity during such challenging times.
