Focus

Four young grain industry leaders have completed a study tour of New Zealand as part of the Australian Universities Crops Competition, an initiative of GrainGrowers.

The four participants were —

  • Candice Robinson (Charles Sturt University student from Whitton, NSW)
  • Ally Dingjan (Charles Sturt University student from Wagga Wagga, NSW)
  • Lachlan Parker (Adelaide University student from Balaklava, SA)
  • Markus Lang (La Trobe University student from Tatura, VIC).

The five-day study tour was awarded to the students for their outstanding performance in the competition, held in Temora in September.

Students had the opportunity to visit some of New Zealand’s top growers, who shared their knowledge of increasing yield using the latest production equipment and farm management techniques.

The study tour helped showcase just how exciting the grain sector is, its various opportunities and the advancements being made.

Your issues

In the coming days, GrainGrowers will be launching its policy development framework. It aims to develop well researched and responsible policy development to protect, promote and support Australian grain producers.

Developing policy within GrainGrowers is about being proactive and responsive to issues that have a direct impact on grain producers. Policy formation begins with identifying, scoping and researching an issue and through policy development, communicating, responding, and shaping the issue, as shown below.

There are four key ways for growers to have a say on the issues that impact them:

  • Personal – through direct communication with the GrainGrowers Policy Manager, or a member of the GrainGrowers’ senior management team.
  • Direct – through the GrainGrowers website.
  • Regional – through GrainGrowers regional meetings or via GrainGrowers regional field officers.
  • National – through GrainGrowers’ National Quarterly Grower Consultation Forum (a forum for all state farming organisations) and the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) to provide policy input and review. In August, GrainGrowers became the grain commodity member of NFF, putting an end to a period where strong representation of grain producers at the national agricultural decision-making table was, sadly, conspicuously missing.

We look forward to hearing from you and representing your perspective at a national level.
